What Patients Remember About a Clinic Visit

MyClinicDesk Team··4 min read

Most patients cannot judge the doctor's skill. They do not know if the root canal was perfect or if the dose was exactly right. They judge the clinic by the parts of the visit that they can see.

These parts start before the patient arrives, and they end after the patient goes home. A small clinic can control most of them.

Before the visit: was it easy to book?

The visit starts with the booking. The patient remembers if somebody answered the phone, or if a message got a reply.

Many patients who cannot get through book with another clinic. A clinic that answers at once, by phone or by WhatsApp, wins the patient before the doctor says a word.

At the desk: how long did I wait?

Patients notice the wait. In India, waits can be very long. A study at a tertiary hospital in Faridabad measured a mean wait of 41.3 minutes to see the doctor, after the wait at registration.

Software does not fix waits on its own. A study at two government facilities in Hyderabad compared a hospital with a hospital management system and a hospital without one. In the hospital with the system, 40.2% of patients reported a long wait. The authors wrote that the system alone did not reduce waiting times.

A small clinic needs a system that takes work off the desk. A system that adds steps for the receptionist makes the queue longer.

Two jobs make the desk slow at a small clinic. The first is registration of new patients by hand. The second is the search for an old patient's card. When patients register on their own phone, and staff find any record by phone number, the queue moves.

In the room: did they know me?

A returning patient wants the clinic to remember them. When the doctor already knows their history and their last prescription, the patient feels cared for.

When the doctor must ask everything again, the patient feels like a stranger. One record per patient, with every visit on it, lets the doctor start with today's problem.

At the end: was the bill clear?

Patients remember the bill. A clear bill lists each treatment and its price. A bill on the patient's phone is easy to keep and easy to show at home.

With MyClinicDesk, staff make each bill from the clinic's price list and send it on WhatsApp in one tap. The prescription can go the same way, so the patient has it at the chemist.

After the visit: did they remember me?

The visit does not end at the door. The patient notices if the clinic sends a thank-you message, or a reminder when the next session is due.

A follow-up message tells the patient that the clinic still cares about the result. It also brings the patient back at the right time, which is good for their health.

In MyClinicDesk, staff mark the visit completed and the patient gets a thank-you message on WhatsApp. When the doctor sets a follow-up date, the patient gets a message when staff save it and a reminder on the day.

What patients tell other people

Patients recommend a clinic to family and friends. They talk about the moments above, from the quick reply to the message after the visit.

After a good visit, staff can send a Google review request on WhatsApp in one tap, so happy patients can tell strangers too.
